Jack and I have been amusing ourselves with brainstorming baby names.
The conversations tend to go like this: My husband-to-be: "Steve."
Me: "No."
My husband-to-be: "Joe."
Me: "No."
My husband-to-be: "Bob."
Me: "That was the villain from Twin Peaks."
My husband-to-be: "... Robert. As in Baratheon."
Me: "I'm putting this on the blog."
One of the names we have agreed on has been Ira, an old name that means "watchful." Who watches the watchmen? This future baby watches the watchmen. It's enough to get a "God damn it, Katie" out of Jack, which is good enough for me.
Out of curiosity we looked up people who have been named Ira in the past. It turns out that the last time "Ira" was popular enough to make the top 100 name list in the US was 1898. It also turns out that a man named Ira Coleman Batman born in 1862, meaning that there exists in this world a Wikipedia article with sentences like "Batman taught school and then went to Indiana University," and "The historic Batman House in Bloomington, Indiana was built for him circa 1890."
Apparently the man was a Republican, but I'm inclined to pardon that in light of the fact that an actual Batman House was built for him.
All in all, I like the name Ira.
