Expired Cheerios

"Is that the cereal above the refridgerator?"

I had a bowl of cheerios at the time. I also had an incredulous fiancee, who had been eyeing my cheerios with what I would realize later was deep concern.

"Yes."

"Katie, those expired in 2013."

"What?"

So it turns out that cereal expires, which is news to me. It also turns out that two-years-expired cheerios taste basically the same as regular cheerios. I finished my bowl. But that's interesting, isn't it? There's a metaphor to be found in expired cheerios. Even that which you assume is eternal will expire, but will still basically taste the same.
