Mental illness is difficult. Physical illness is difficult. This has been a year of struggling and, also, of watching other people struggle. So I'm going to be incredibly sentimental on this solstice. I'm going to give each of you my confused, struggling, indistinct wish of well-being, coached in the language of my religion. And maybe that will make a difference.

You are made in the image of the gods.

The great primordial ones with hands that span the earth and feet that rattle mountains, they have given you their strength.

The ones known by modern names and in modern places keep pace with the progress of technology, the promise of science and of medicine, the struggles of the people, they have given you their grounding, your tether to the world.

The warrior goddesses who cry out with voices forged from fire, they have given you their fierceness.

The poet gods who sing with voices as deep and moving as the sea, they have given you their pathos.

Those who keep the dead tend their hearths against the cold and welcome every stranger, they have given you their generosity, their hospitality, their spirit of sanctuary.

Those who walk the land and raise all green growing life, crops and weeds and flowering trees, they have given you their patience, their respect for each new-built cell that turns its face sunward.

Those who have set the moon and the stars in their places have given you a visual and ever-present metaphor, that there is light still within darkness, a lamp for all travelers, and wonders still to be discovered.

Gods without gender and gods with many genders too take up harp and horn, a place in the healer's home or the wild heart of the forest, and they have given you the blessing of their freedom, the knowledge that wherever you may fall on so many physical and psychological spectrums, there is a face to echo your own, and a gentle hand to guard you against the world.

The solstice has come. Go with the gods.
