What will life be like with a mental illness in a hundred years?
I hope that this coming century brings a great deal of social awareness and understanding of mental illnesses. It would be such a good thing to have evaluations for mental illness available to everyone, so that those people who are struggling to figure out what is going on in their lives can have some answers. Having information available for parents, too, would be ideal.
I would want to see medication become more affordable. Medication has changed my life dramatically for the better, and I see too many people forego it because they can't afford the cost. Perhaps, with more research on mental illness, medications can be developed to act faster and have less side effects, and be easier to produce.
Maybe I'm setting my sights too low. Maybe by 2116 we'll have nanobots who can travel to the brain to reconfigure neurons, or a Star Trek beam to the head that will force thoughts to cooperate. Maybe dealing with obsessiveness and paranoia and depression will be as easy as taking one pill, one time.
I guess we'll see.
